how thick should it be?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Just curious what the recomended thickness the ice needs to be for a snowmobile. I see all this virgin powder in the bay and am starting to get anxious.

I'm not sure how far back a search of the site goes, but I remember last year someone posted a really great chart that showed the safety numbers for ice thickness...

Maybe someone out there still has it?

I remember it showed safe thicknesses for people, ATV's etc, then cars and trucks etc.

Anyone have it??

It is all on personal preference really guys...What are you safe with??? I will not go on with a skidoo until it is about 6-8"...some will go on with 4-5"...If you want to play it safe and now this is my safe...go with 8" and all will be good....Now also you will need to look at what type of ice it is as this will weaken or strengthen the ice as well.

Seabass I think the recommendation is 8" for a snowmobile.

Seabass,

I was at Oxtongue Lake on the weekend and noticed about 30-35 snowmobiles on it. I punched a few holes to find anywere from 5-8 inches of ice.

Personaly I do not go on until there is 8 inches of ice and 12 inches if my son is with me, but that is my opinion.

Happy trails,

Jackel 8)
