Has anyone used Compre Muskie Rods?
Hey guys,
I was looking at picking up a Shimano Compre Muskie series, does anyone throw them? What do people think? Any problems? They seem like they're a pretty decent value.

compre
What lures are you going to be throwing?
Trolling big body baits requires the stiffist rods available
you will be amazed how far a heavy action rod will double back
when a big 30- 40 pound muskie is heading in the other direction
I use a compre 6.6 foot x-heavy its like a log still bends when a fish is on matched with a blue abu (I find this reel to difficult to cast)
casting inline bucks/mg spinnerbaits requires a lot more flex
more tip flex times longer rod = more distance and in turn more fish
when pitching 2-4oz baits a bit of flex will inevitably save more than a few 20 dollar spinners
It's inevitable to lose at least 60 dollars a day in lures
all it takes is line twist or a finger in the way and snap
there flies your last black/blue inline
I bought my first st-croix (the rep just happened to be there)
for this purpose at bass pro vaughn
model pm70mhf graphite
medium heavy fast action
matched with my favorite reel in the arsenault
shimano calcutta 200b(the poor mans calcutta)
this combo with 80lb power pro costs 650
I got to tell you it's worth it
push botton ease of casting
when you do it all day, really is the cats butt
So now you need two rods
two reels
and 1000s in lures

Thanks for the warning RJ,
I appreciate the concern, and I understand your reasoning, but I think that I would eventually want to make the leap up to the awesome (If somewhat rediculously priced) rod. I understand the risks but I do love the loomis product...
I'll keep you posted next season, hopefully with some nice pics of 'ski's and not a shot of a broken $250 rod....
Best fishes,
Matt

Hey Crusty,
Thanks for the thorough appraisal. I'll keep that in mind when I'm making my final decision. I'm not planning on doing too much trolling, I figure that'd take a pretty specialized long-rod (Bigger then 7'6") and my boat doesn't lend itself very well to trolling. I've got a couple of nice new ambassadeur's that I use on my current heavy rods, so I think I'm covered for reels for the time being. I've already got a number of Jakes, depth-raiders, swim baits and super-shads that I use for Northerns, so that'll hopefully get me going. Like most things in fishing I'm sure I'll soon have more jumbo baits than I know what to do with. No, I haven't fished the kawartha's, but I may be re-locating to Peterborough in the next couple seasons so I hope to get to know the area a little better.
Thanks again.

kawarthas
last three summer vacations have been to kawarthas
sooooooooo much water
you could spend a month without fishing the same water
We like to stay at woodlands campground on Buckhorn
you can pitch a tent 4 feet from your boat tie up
if you check out the maps on this site it will give you a start
the lakes are clear and full of coontail
average depth is 5 feet (watch your prop)
the key is to find 'cuts' at 8-9 feet deep
these cuts could be as small as 4 feet wide by 15 to 100 feet long
but I've seen 3 20lb fish come out of one whole in a day
the fish can be tempermental, once you know the holes you hit the same hole three times a day and run and gun to the next
Because of the heavy weeds this is in-line/spinner country
use natural bucktail as it withstands the cleaning against the water on everycast... Tried a bionic with plastic skirt lasted two casts
colours of choice on this water....
yellow,black,blue,purple brown
caught one twenty trolling jointed believer(fluke)
anyone else out there have any bait or systems for this water?

I have been using two Compre's for close to three years now, they have not let me down yet. The longer rod (7', I know its not long) I use for trolling with an Abu 6500 C3 with a clicker that I hold most of the time instead of using the rod holder. As my user name suggests I like to cast so, thats what I do most of the time with te 6'6" rod. The other rods will will show up when more time is spent on the water and $ shows up, for now the Shimano's are doing very well for me. Two thumbs up for the Compre's for the price.
