Worst Lure Awards for 2005

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Worst Lure Awards for 2005

Post by wolfe »

Just a thought. We're always discussing which lures we love or "go to".

Are there any that you guys and girls own which you feel deserve to make the "Loser Lure Award List for 2005"??

It might be funny to see what folks have in their arsenal that they haven't had any luck with -- or that has the action of a rock. Someone's junk might be considered someone else's treasure.

I'm going to give this some thought, but I think my lack of success with certain lures has more to do with presentation than with the lure itself.

I can think of one lure that Brian has had for about 10 or more years in his box. It's called a "Leroy Brown" and it's a kind of crankbait. I think it has caught 1 fish, maybe 2 in all those years. When it was new, he would use it frequently. Every now and then, Bri puts it on as a joke. This past summer he caught a rockbass on it.

I had better not see white spinnerbaits appear on anyone's list!

The biggest dud in my tacklebox ... senkos or senko-like baits. Don't work for me, although I've seen them work for others.

Tubes and Venum Slings accounded for 90% of my bass....sorry Bud...but the worst bait of the year ...for me was the white Spinner Bait

My go to would have to be a Johnson Silver Minnow. I have many caught pike on it on a day when no one else could get anything. I love that thing.

My duds are basically 90% of the crap in my tackle box that I look at and say, man this is going to be great..... '

Rapala RistoRap. I finaly just pitched it in the grabage! Never caught a darn thing on it. Rapala makes excellent cranks, but we all know why this one was discontinued....it sucked!

Well, without a doubt, it was Spinnerbaits  and it was'nt due to a lack of using them. Sure i caught fish but as a search bait or to put some better fish in the boat it just was'nt meant to be. I also discovered i had some weird jigs that were given to me years ago when i worked in the industry. People were forever giving me new stuff to try in hopes that their new hot lure would find a spot on the wall at the shop. These jigs were made of scrap bikini material and as i found out, i was the only one who was fond of them LOL!

This is not really an ugly-bait phenomenon, but it drives me nuts...

I have a particular brand of senko-type bait that I like. Gimme pumpkin-seed flavour in that stick-bait and I am off to the races. But the watermelon flavour of that brand? They don't work! I have bags and bags of them - useless! They are only slightly different shades of green.

Last summer I had to resort to digging into my daughter's plastics box (my discards) in search of pumpkinseed senkos - no matter how tattered. Smallmouth, largemouth, deep lakes, shallow lakes - I can't get the fish to bite on a watermelon. The pumpkinseed produced immediate results eveytime.

Now that I have loaded up with pumpkinseed the reverse will become true for me.

By far my worst baits this year were jigs, crankbaits, spinner baits, spoons, plastics, or spinners ... I guess anyhting with a hook on it, attached to a line with me an the other end ... so, i guess i was my worst bait ....

Hey

I bought a couple of scumfrogs. I had heard they work great but I managed only one fish. Probably fished a good ten hours with it. Looks great though in the water. I am going try it again next year.

Well Dumb butt...   you can't be moving at the speed of light to use them. So I don't really think it's the bait that is the dud
