Quick and Easy - Portable Rod Holders

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Quick and Easy - Portable Rod Holders

Post by M.T. Livewell »

Boat forum, boat forum, my kingdom for a boat forum ...

Anyway. I have the pleasure of fishing with Furious and JignPig tomorrow at Quinte. Having checked with Furious, his boat is currently equipped with 4 rod holders. That means we either run 4 rods with 3 guys, or somebody holds onto 2 rods. :?

The solution:
I had picked up a couple of berkley rod holders (similar to these)
Image

It comes with 2 bases. One for a surface mount and 1 for a side mount. The surface mounts are currently on my rod holder board in the VIP. The side mounts were sitting idle.

So, I am bringing along my small tool box containing my modest trolling accessories, including my planar boards, clips, and cannon balls.
So, I opened up the lid, drilled 4 pilot holes to match the mount, and then screwed them through the tool box into a wood backing. Done in less than 1/2 hour.

What I end up with is 2 portable rod holders.

I think the secret to its success will be the 2 x 10lb cannonballs. I will try to remember to snap a few pics in between all the giant walleyes we reel in tomorrow.

I expect you could try something similar with a tacklebox or something similar. And if lack of weight is an issue, you could either cram the box into a corner, or tie it down in the boat somehow. I may have to wedge the tackle box up to this as well, we'll see.

All of this to say, we now have our six rod holders and didn't have to drill any new holes in Furious' boat.

Hey Tim the Tool Man....

How do you expect to aim the rods out the side without the butts of the rods getting in each others way?...

I like the part about not drilling holes into my boat.

This should be interesting.

1 Princecraft 179.....$25000
6 rods and reels.....$1500
The look on peoples faces when they see JignPig getting dragged overboard with a tool box stuck to his butt....PRICELESS

First off I have seen your kingdom...

Secondly...who's butt is gonna go between those Rods? Don't forget you will have a floater suit on. Man I wanna go just to see a fish hit and watch you spin around like a dog chasing its tail to get the tool box off your butt..

It could work....it could work....I like the idea of a foam cushion in the middle of the box....don't listen to the countless skeptics
I think that would work nicely for carp fishing. Set the ol' baitrunner with a bolt rig in that awesome contraption 8) 8) ... a man could even have a beverage and read the paper! How much do they sell for?

A+++ for initiative. :idea:
...anything to bend the rod
