Charleston Lake Report

Well Cast41 and I made it out to Charleston Lake this morning for the lake trout opener. There sure were alot of boats out there. We got on the water at about 6 AM and we were greeted by a beautiful sunrise.
Then we headed to a good spot shown to me by MuskyMagnet which by the way we met there. We started setting up our downriggers and lines. We didn't even get the second line out and the first rod popped up and I was into the first fish. Not a bad start to the day.
And again, we set up the two rods and started trolling. Not ten minutes goes by, we're into our second fish. Cast41 takes this one and lands this nice fish.
To sum it up, we were on the lake at about 6 AM and done by 9:30 AM. We caught 11 lakers. We kept 4 and the rest were safely released. It was a great day.

Looks to be a bunch of boats out there....
I'll be there for 4 days at weeks end....can't wait!
Great report....
I saw at least 20 boats go by my place today sportin' downriggers.....the lakers surely took a beating today....

Curious, DV_8,
What depth were you finding them at?
My accidental laker earlier this week was caught in shallow water; don't think it could have been more than 7 or 8'. With these warmer temps, I imagine they're already moving down??

Nice fish guys. I am obviously doing something wrong. How come I can never get a release. Regardless of what release I use for both trout and walleye I end up dragging the fish around. What are the best releases for light hitting fish. The strange thing is, today I was running a lure speed of 1.25 mph If I increased my speed over 1.75 my lines would release ( this is how light they are) however at 1.25 I dragged 8 fish around.

I use WaLker adjustabLe Line releases. In my opinion these are the best hands down.

Hi Xenos,
Not all the fish released the line. The bigger fish do but the smaller ones usually don't. A good thing to do is have the wire line that runs from the cannonball to the release clip extra long. Mine are almost three feet long. That way if the fish doesn't release the line, you will see the rod bounce up and down and it gives you the indication of a fish on. You then just pop the release yourself and reel in the fish.

We were catching all the fish between 45 and 55 feet of water. The two or three days before the opener the weather really got warmer. It drove the fish to go a little deeper. By the end of June, we will probably be catching them in 100 feet or more of water. I don't think you would catch them in 7 or 8 feet of water anymore. If you were in the deep side of the lake and close to deep water, it's possible for a trout to come up close to shore and grab a few minnows. But if you were let say in the small bay at the mouth of Leader's Creek then I would say that was an accidental catch.
