Playin hooky with Muskiemagnet....new Canadian record?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Playin hooky with Muskiemagnet....new Canadian record?

Post by RJ »

Well with the weather heating up....and the gar in full flight.....we had set a goal to take a shot at breaking the Canadian record......it presently stands at 13.9 lbs.....

We headed to our hole.....knowing the water had dropped even more....we were unsure of the possibilities....

After a lovely exchange with a fella in a dinghy...(to be shared at the campfire)....  .....we made our way to the area we had success last season.....Carp everywhere.....hundreds of them....boiling in the shallows....obviously some carp porn goin on....

We moved out a bit.....Gar on!...I'm into one.....we aren't even there half an hour... :D ...a beautifully coloured 39 incher....I'm not gonna post the pic to protect the area...

As we made our way thru the hundreds of carp....Magnet is throwin his tried and true Williams spoon......fish on!.....CARP!... ...after a decent battle.....30 incher....

Image

Now it all gets a little sketchy as I've forgotten the order of fish...

Magnet ends up with 2 walleye....3 pike.....and 1 gar...

Here's a few of his pics...

Image

33 Incher...
Image

Nothing like getting the hardhitting walleyes in 3 feet of water....at 1 o'clock in the afternoon....

I ended up with 1 walleye and 3 gar....

32 Incher...

Now it's been a pretty good report til now I think........BUT.....there's the kicker....

We spot a giant gar.....I pitch at it.....it turns and tracks my bait.....firing up the Jaws tune...FISH ON!....Magnet is yelling..."that is the Canadian record!...don't lose it!".....Hook is in great....no worries.... :D

Into the cradle she slides....all 49 inches of her.....she had the girth that put her way up in weight....

She weighed in at 14.7 on my digi scale...that has the reputation of being way light.... :D

Decision time.....what do we do?....to claim the record...the fish has to be killed...then weighed in....we were both confident that it was a record beating fish.....so.......

Here's a few pics of her.....truly an amazing fish...I was shaking for about 20 minutes after....

Here's a closeup of her yap.....my lord....

And the decision was...

Image

Back she went.....Pat and I gave a big high five.....and off she went....

We knew it was THE fish that would do it.....but we wanted to crush the record.....not just beat it....  Stay tuned on that one.....

Thanks a million to Magnet for a great day of hooky......every time we get together in a boat great things happen.....looking forward to more of it... :D

A very happy....RJ

Gorgeous fish, RJ! I think you made the right decision. A shame you have to kill it to claim a record.

I see you're in MM's Lund. Beautiful boat. When I'm finally 'allowed' to buy a boat I am definately leaning toward tiller-driven just for the added room. Looks like you could land a plane in that boat!

I wonder if I could get me one of them there gars in my canoe.....? :?

Simply amazing fish guys....

Way to go RJ

That was the right decision... you know you can do better. I saw one the other day that was twice the size too... but rest assured that I have not the foggiest idea how to catch them... nor would I want to mess with that yap full of teeth.

I was in the Rideau today... all I can say is.... yech.... what a mess that water is in. Got some small pike in the morning. The rest of the day I pulled grass, slime, algae, and other types of floating debris from my lures. Temps were near Seventy and better in some back bays.

That's a real beauty! Great catch and nice to see it back in the water to be caught again.
It's great to have such a great fishery right at our doorsteps, especially with fish like Gar that aren't found everywhere.

That's a great report guys! Nice mixed bag of fish, but I think your dreamin if you think that fish is an ounce over 10lbs.

I'll be up there mid June....checkin out those back bays.....people pay for less than half the day you boys had. Awesome.
