Yet another Battery Problem

I guess it's that time of year when people are checking their batteries. Okay, my trolling battery has died again, I have been buying the CT specials and they don't last that long, 2 years max, my cranker, also a CT special is fine at 4 years. So I need a new trolling battery. I have seen mention on this site of a shop in Ottawa specialising in batteries so some hints would be appreciated. Also, what should I be looking at, my past decisions were based on the biggest I could fit in my battery box!!! Do I concentrate on AMP/Hour rates or reserve capacity or both.

You need a deep cycle battery for your trolling motor. A starting/cranking battery ( car battery) will not hold up for your trolling motor.

Total battery should be able to hook you up with a decent battery. Sometimes it pays to spend a little extra to get a battery that last. With that said, with any brand of battery proper maintenance is the key (regular charging, top battery cells for non-sealed batteries, don't store in the freezing cold, etc.). I have already killed one battery due to lack of proper maintenance and I just checked my deep cycle this weekend and looks like it may not last this season. Bad on me

thanks guys, I shall take a trip down there - I saw on the web the make is Trojan - is this the one I should be looking at?? I'll go down to the West end some time this week.

Hi Ady, I've been using a Trojan from Total for three years now and it still kicks _ss. To find out how big a battery you need and what you need in reserve hours go to the Minkota website. It will give you the formula to use to figure out all that good stuff. Not hard just essential. Take care and catch you later.
