thanks everyone for the kind thoughts, encouragement and humor, too.

the situation is starting to sink in and i'm pretty frustrated with my inability to do anything with my left hand. i keep testing myslef and will say something like, i'm sure i can hold a pen if i just try....well guess what...i can't. the hand just 'doesn't work' and/or hurts too much if i try. i am unabashedly 'type a', so this will be an adjustment -- and maybe a lesson in life.

pints, you are so funny. brian told me to ask if i need a cast can the doctor form a rod holder into it. too funny, but hmmmm....

mikemicropterus, i know anyone who has horses gets this whole episode; it happens, and it's part of the sport and horse-life. i think when i ride again i will kick it back a notch and slow things down a little. i am a mom and do need to think of my kids 1st. but i will ride again when doc's say it's ok.

bucket - i have seen that clip and it is just so inspiring and amazing. it makes you put things into perspective and realize how good most of us truly have it and how we take so much for granted.

it will be like a cruel mirage to a thirsty soul being at the cottage and not being able to fish this summer. hope that's not the case.

of course, this was the season to take the torpedo down a notch from his lofty pedestal.

Wow Wolfe! I was going to say it was a good thing it wasn't your casting hand, but it sounds like the left hand is in no shape to operate a reel. One thing I know for sure after recovering from recent surgery myself is if there is a will to fish there is a way; I also believe fishing is healing to the body and mind. Might have to take a time out for a while, but you still can act as coach and photographer for the rest of the clan. I hope you heal fast...keep us abreast of your recovery and eventual return from the DL.

Maybe you could aks the the doctor to wind in a piece of PVC pipe for a rod holder while he's doing your cast.

Sorry to hear about that Wolfe. I know what its like to have the fishing interupted. I had surgery 3 months ago on my right arm and this Friday I have surgery on it. The docs told me 4 to 6 weeks of recovery time but after the first surgery I was using my arm within 2 weeks. Carefully though but I just couldnt sit still that long. I just adjusted how I did things but managed. The lure of the water was just to strong. Hopefully after this surgery I will be able to get out there and enjoy fishing. Either way you can still get out and enjoy the boys catching their monsters, you will just have to be the camera woman.

I do recall seeing on some TV show (Rod&Reel I think) an electric powered reel set up designed for handicapped anglers. Don't know if they are still available but it might be worth looking into if you are bitten as badly as the rest of us with the fishing bug.

The kids might just have to say "Well Mom, that's not the hand you use to drive the boat is it??"

had the dye contrast mri today. awaiting news from the dr. on whether i'll need surgery to reattach ligaments which accord'g to the preliminary report are no longer attached, or barely so. wrist is definitely broken; at least i know that much.

got my hot pink cast today, which will have to come off for surgery, if it's needed. then back on. if just a break, cast is on appx 4 wks; if also a ligament disruption, then 8 wks........

thx for the kind thoughts -- pray i don't need surgery.

looks like i may not need surgery; ligaments are stretched, but they seem to be intact. have to get the break re-cast next week & the good hand xrayed to compare the ligament spacing & will hopefully still have the doc's belief that the lig's can heal properly on their own. break is painful, but i'm happy no surgery next week as we were originally expect'g. thx for continued prayers. one working hand is not enough for this gal. i'm very frustrated w/ my inability to do basic stuff.
