I'm not sure if everybody is aware of this, but:
During real cold weather such as we had recently (and as we undoubtedly will have again, and again...)
fish eyes can freeze, causing blindness, in a matter of a minute or so.
If you plan on releasing your catch, please be sure to get it back down the hole ASAP.

tip-up -believe me, although my post was triggered by your post, it was not meant to be a criticism of your bass photo. I had no way of knowing how long the fish was out of water, or even if it was released.
I have been researching (trying to) how long fish can be safely kept out the water when caught through the ice. I was hoping to get some kind of guidelines- eg at 0 degrees- 2 minutes, at -10 degrees- 1 minute, at -20- 30 seconds, etc, etc.
Unfortunately, I have not been able to find any studies on this subject, although I'm still looking.
SOOOOOO, that's why I went with ASAP.
