Something to remember...

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Something to remember...

Post by Cancatchbass »

I'm not sure if everybody is aware of this, but:

During real cold weather such as we had recently (and as we undoubtedly will have again, and again...)

fish eyes can freeze, causing blindness, in a matter of a minute or so.

If you plan on releasing your catch, please be sure to get it back down the hole ASAP.

Good point CCB. Many times I have seen people take to long to release a fish on a frigid day. Thanks for the reminder.

tip-up -believe me, although my post was triggered by your post, it was not meant to be a criticism of your bass photo. I had no way of knowing how long the fish was out of water, or even if it was released.

I have been researching (trying to) how long fish can be safely kept out the water when caught through the ice. I was hoping to get some kind of guidelines- eg at 0 degrees- 2 minutes, at -10 degrees- 1 minute, at -20- 30 seconds, etc, etc.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to find any studies on this subject, although I'm still looking.

SOOOOOO, that's why I went with ASAP.
