Was fishing Constance lake tonight, flipping a craw on a shore line when I felt a tap, nothing out of the ordinary right, WRONG. Reel down and set the hook, low and behold a 4ft water snake chewing on my craw. It wasn't hooked, but it's teeth were stuck in the craw and was there for about 3 minutes. We took this pic just before it swam away. Creepy. I won't be putting my feet in that water any time soon .
at least it was something to remember.

Snake eatin craw
I saw the snake where you have it posted .... man that is one ugly snake. I think I would have been cutting the line.
I used to catch those snakes when I was a kid. It's a Northern Water Snake. They are very common in the Ottawa Valley. They get a LOT bigger than that too. Up to 4 ft long.
Here is some information on them:

They are completely harmless. They'll bite you if confronted, but it doesn't really hurt that much. Will draw a little blood though.

JP,
Wouldn't want one on the end of my line, but snakes are beneficial. I try to break the chain of fear by calling my kids over when there's one (garter snake) in the yard. I've even gone so far as to pick one or two up to let the kids "pet" them once I've got its head in check. The ones I've picked up are tiny, though; I wouldn't want to get too chummy with the one you had writhing on the end of your line!
You just never know what you're going to reel in, do ya!

Thanks, Dad, for taking me fishing when I was a kid.
Snake is ok
I'm (and the snake) are lucky that he/she never had the hook in it. It was just stuck on the craw with it's teeth in the plastic. The weird thing is that it picked the bait up off the bottom and the water was only 66 degrees. I agree that snakes are very important to the environment, but it was still creepy seeing it come up from the bottom .
Once it freed it self, it swam away with no worries and under a log.
