What's up with all these sturgeon??

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

What's up with all these sturgeon??

Post by Yannick Loranger »

Has anyone else been getting lots of sturgeon on the Ottawa this year? I've been in on 3 since Sunday. The fish in general are on a different pattern than years past. My first ice/last ice only spot is red hot now, my mid season spot if almost bone dry, there's sturgeon everywhere, the sauger are super aggressive, what's going on?

Yan, been on the same thing as you! 2 sturgeons within a week and the usual mid-ice walleye spots aren't producing.

I think it's a good sign that their population is on the rise (fingers crossed).
Just be sure to put em back asap.

yup, we'd usually take a quick pic and throw them back, but we're kinda sick of them now, they're back down the hole as soon as the hook is out. Anyway, got some mid day walleye/sauger for the first time since I moved to Rockland 3 winters ago (albeit I never really tried very hard mid day). Got 1 walleye and 4 sauger today all between 11:15am and 2:00 pm in 30-40 fow. Nothing at all after 2:00. It's a weird winter so far and yes I agree, it is a good sign we're seeing so many sturgeon.

Tight lines,

Two small dinks last year at Petrie on bottom. Quick pick then released. Pretty cool catching one through the ice since I have never caught one in the soft water season. I was amazed at how sharp their spines are.
