Gouin Trip Aug 08 (Walleye School)

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Gouin Trip Aug 08 (Walleye School)

Post by McQ »

I'm planning a trip to the Nemio River on the Gouin Reservoir the week of Aug 18 - Aug 24. A few of the members have already indicated an interest in coming along. It is possible to accomodate 12 in 2 cabins.

The costs should come in at about $550 / person, the extras being travel & gas at the lodge. Boat & motor / 2 fishermen.

There will be a bit of education, a ton of fun and great eats.

You can get a look at the site here http://www.nemio.com

If you're interested send me a PM & include your phone #.

Bill

Here’s a great opportunity to fish with a guy (McQ) who most of you know as a very knowledgeable fisherman. Additionally, he is an expert about fishing the Gouin Reservoir. He’s been on most of the Reservoir and that by itself is an accomplishment. The surface area of the Gouin Reservoir is 1570 square kilometers and there is over 5600 km of shoreline (excluding islands). It’s a very big place!

How’s the fishing there? In Aug 2005, McQ and I spent a week fishing Baie du Nord out of Nemio’s. Fishing real easy (never on the water before 10 AM nor after 5 PM), we caught maybe 175 walleye during the week – and we endured two major thunderstorms. Our best day was 40 walleye between the two of us in 5 hours. The average size of the walleye we caught was 15 - 18 inches. We caught some nice 20-23 inchers and we lost one 25 incher at the boat. Accommodations were great as was the equipment. The area is very scenic. And if you like wild blueberries, mid Aug is a great time to pick them there. I’m looking forward to going again.

Count me in.
I've heard so many stories coming out of the Reservoir, that it just has to be seen first hand. This will be my first trip in. I've fished in Ear Falls up near Red Lake, Cuba and now heading for some of the best walleye fishing grounds going, and with a very educational person in MQ. The education alone will be worth the trip, let alone the comraderie of Tomcat and MQ.

Hey Jay,

how's things? I was just discussing the Gouin this week with folks at work.

I'd love to join you, Bill and Brian up there but, the timing's bad for me, family time and all that you know.

Should be a whale of a trip though. Maybe next time.

I have been going to Nemio for 3 years now and can attest to the fact that there are certainly a lot of fish to be caught. We go in early June and last year our largest walleye was 8.5 and largest pike well over 10.

The hosts are great people and if you want more details about their camp they will be at the Carp show next month.

If you go take your blue knuckleball jigs with you.
Good luck.

Shouldn't be long to fill those seats. Too bad my vacation weeks are in July and start of August.

Received a phone call from Ronnie yesterday - telling me about the new boats and their plans for the Carp Show.

I'll be in their booth at least one of the days, drop in and say hello.

It's a much better and safer deal to rent the lodge boats. The trip in is 130 miles of gravel - nice road but the stone chips can really do some damage to a paint job. - first hand experience. Can be hard on trailers too.

The lodge boats are 16' Princecraft Fishermen with 15 hsp Mercs. Great fishing boats!

I'm quite sure that they will give me a deal on the rentals making it even better.

Here's a pic of a Gouin northern .

This would have been great Bill...

Unfortunately it coincides with my West-Arm Nippissing trip that I do every year in August.

Can't wait to see the reports

This is a great time of the year for fishing walleye - summer peak is in high gear and the fish really have the feedbag on.

We will be bottom bouncing harnesses, lindy rigging, slipping floating jigs, jigging plastics, cranking, boarding and fine tuning sonar techniques.

Time will be spent back trolling with emphasis on boat control.

Using the boards to get up into the shallows where the big girls are.

Rigging choices will be explained and jigging the right baits will be detailed.

Crankbait selection - color, size and depth.

Come on up - the more the merrier.

Just great Joe, thanks for asking.

Another ten months to full pension - geez I'm getting old!

Why don't you take a break from chasing those green fish and get up here for a bit of Quebec gold.

How's that gang over at Rona Hardware doing??
Met them last week and they are going up in June.
Come on over to the August trip for a GREAT TIME and Education.
They keep telling me the fishing is getting slower and slower every year.
I thinks they need a refresher course.....
