the get together is coming soon....TONIGHT

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

A correction to the attendance list Joco. In my post I used shorthand to indicate I was checking with Nancy (w/). Nancy will not be attending.

Thank God!

Hi all -

Maybe this is already in the works, but I was going to suggest bringing a few of the fish-hawk hats to the get together. I'm new to the group and would like to pick one up. Plus I'm nervous and looking for anyway to help me fit in.

Well, since you've made me feel so welcome allow me to introduce myself and post a few pics.

My story begins back in the small town of New Liskeard located in Northern Ontario. It was a great place to grow up and one of the best parts was living across the street from a lake, Lake Temiskaming. Lake Temiskaming is a huge lake but practically all of my time was spent hurling pickeral rigs loaded with shiners from the shore. I started somewhere around age 6 - I was old enough to cross the street by myself, whatever age that is. I can clearly remember my first fish - it was a Walleye! Well, a pickeral back then. I'm now 28 and still my personal best in Pike (10lbs) and walleye (5lbs) came from the shore right across the street from my childhood home.

Probably because my brother and I liked fishing so much, my family started to rent a cottage in the very small town of Gowganda. Early on I would literally hang out around the fishing dock and go out with guys who were fishing solo and wanted someone to man the net and put down their trolling motors (and also just take a kid out fishing of course). We soon befriended a man named Woody who acted as an unofficial guide around the camp. We became close friends and for two weeks a year, for the next 14 years, Woody, me and my brother Dave would spend every day fishing.

I left for University in 1997 after which point we stopped renting the cottage up there. I still make it back every year and have started a new tradition where I get together with four of my university friends and head up there for a camping weekend. It's over a 6 hour drive up there, but the country is amazing. We portage into a lake named Obushgon, and catch a lot of walleye (usually around 15"), pike (typically 24"), and bass.

I spend most of my time trolling, using either BlueFox Vibrax tipped with a minnow or a jig-head and spinner with a worm. Red jig-heads seem to work best up there for walleye.

I moved to Ottawa in 2001 and this summer I got my first boat! It's a 12ft aluminum that goes on the roof of my car and can hang from the ceiling of my townhouse's garage , so it is perfect for my current situation. I got it around August and I've been out in it 4 times here in Ottawa. We've done well at the top of rapids by the Brittania yacht club, putting in at the sand boat launch at the end of Rowatt street. We've caught nice walleye and bass - and a couple of weeks ago I had something grab onto a 15" walleye as I was bringing it in. What a rush! I think it might have been one of those fish affectionately referred to as "Toothy Critters" on this forum. I'm really looking forward to gearing up for those guys!

This forum is amazing, especially to someone just starting to learn about fishing around Ottawa. Like most, I love to learn about new techniques of how to catch fish - but the reality is that I've basically been fishing the same way my whole life. However, reading the the information that people generously post on this site has me excited about new techniques to catch bigger fish. The tackle store looks like a different place to me now. Most importantly, this is a great place to educate and promote conservation techniques.

I'd like to send a couple shout-outs: to Fishhawk, Bobber, and all organizers of fish-hawk.net. Also, I enjoy reading all postings but in particular BigBassRich - insightful and hilarious; and Jig-Head and Tip-Up: you guys are amazingly talented. Thanks for the encouragement Wallyboss and Kpin - now I know to bring my banjo. And thanks for hat update bowzog.

I'm nothing but questions at this point, but I'll refrain for now.

Here are some pictures from this season:

Thats a great introduction Steve. I think you will find that for the most part the people on this site are welcoming and always willing to share tips and give helping advice. Today one of those guys took me out on my very first musky outing. Thanks MuskyMatt for the very informative day I really enjoyed it and learned quite alot, to bad that big one got away!!!!!!!

Anyway Steve, welcome and maybe Clown Worship and I will see you at the get together. Right now it all depends on if I can get out of work early enough, if I can we will probably be there.

JOCO I will let you know by tomorrow afternoon if Clown and I can make it. I will post here to give you an answer, I hope we can come, lets hope its a slow night so I can leave early.

I also bought myself a survival suit today as they were on sale 50% off, for those cold and wet, rough days, Im sure I will get to use it especially when I head down to Quint for the big eyes.

Well enough with the rambling , hopefully see ya at Lone Star.

Don A.K.A. BADGER SHARK P.S. If someone can find a fish-hawk hat I would love to buy one as I lost mine 2 weeks ago

You sure it's really working late Badger? Or is it (insert whipping sound), a ball and chain is slowing you down?

Great intro Steve.

It should be another nice get together.
