Down to NY for the day...Pics

Down to NY for the day...Pics

Post by Mike Lennox »

Hey all,

I have been planning a trip to New York for almost a month, and I was had high hopes for some brown and brook trout.

Morning:
After getting my brother a license at Kmart we were at the spot. It was pocketwater like I anticipated with pools and runs further downstream. I started with a size 12 ausable wulff and got a hit the first cast...chub :( . After 2 hours of pounding the water with tiny parachute flies, usuals, stimmys and wullfs. The rocks were coverered in golden stone fly shucks so I changed to a wooly bugger with my size 8 beadhead woodchuck nymph behind. After 15 minutes or in the same run I hooked a little 9 inch stocked rainbow. Finally...broke the skunk :D . At the next pool I hooked what I knew was a nice fish. After a long and powerful fight I got him to the net :P . My best brown trout to date!!! A solid 22 inches(mesured) It took the woodchuck nymph. The barbless hook slid out easily and we were ready to let it go.

Here's the release shot...After about 30 seconds it was gone. It was tired after the battle with my 4wt  .

Afternoon:
Less pocketwater more pools and runs. In one section I caught a rainbow around 10 inches on an ausable wulff. Further up the river thinned out and turned into pocketwater and I changed to a size 14 royal coachman. I caught 2 brookies and had one small one flip off right before my hand  : One in the 6 inch range and the other was 9-10 inches. I was very surprised to catch one that size in such a small section of river.

All in all I would have to say it was my best day of fishing this year by far. I am looking forward to next years adventure down there.

You are my type of fishermen. 1/2 the fun is imagining and the journey.

Beautiful fish, Mike!

Now I can see why Ganman loves it down there. It's not just the scenery!

Hey YF what a nice trout! That's 2 years in a row know you've got a big trout. Sometime will you take me fishing?

Always nice to hear about brookies in those rivers especially the little natives it means they are still spawning.
