Latest creation

Post by kingofbeasts »

I would like this topic to be the one where people who build their own fishing stuff can expose their latest creation.
It took me a While to gather the proper tools for rod building here in Canada and it took me even more time to get the supplies I need but finally , not without effort, I managed to finish my first Canadian rod so here it is :

Thank you :)
Basically I used just the blank, some Fuji thread , Fuji K-type High frame guides (SIC + Torzite runners ), and the CFX Custom Carbon Fiber Grip Kit from Mudhole ( http://www.mudhole.com/CFX-Custom-Carbon-Fiber-Grip-Kit). The reel seat is my own creation and is hidden inside the grip. Everything is hand made on the handle (no readily available parts :P ).

This is my wife's rod and it is intended to be used with small lipless crank baits, inline spinners and light jigging for smallmouth and walleye . It will occasionally be used as a worm rod as well for bass.

Another one in the making :) NFC SJ 736 X-Ray 7'3'' , 1/4-1oz, 10-17lb .
It is the most comfortable grip I ever built so far and it's not looking so bad either :) Specifically carved for my hand so it fits like a glove ;)

Definitely interesting.

With all of your pics, I always wonder how you are managing to hide the real seat within the handle?

Any pics of it open?

Well it’s not what you will consider a conventional reel seat hidden inside. It is something built from scratch using a basic principle namely “friction creates drag ( or grip). I designed it such that everything fits perfectly just like a bolt and wrench and when you “force” the reel foot inside the grip will constrict around it ( therefore the name “Constrictor reel seat “ I gave it). The idea was to make it more comfortable, lightweight and more sensitive than conventional reel seats and after 5 years of use I can pretty much say I achieved all those goals ;)
Here are some pictures with this one open:

4 years ago I made a few videos of it including a tutorial of the very first way of doing it ( I wanted it to be an open concept for everyone skillful enough do be able to do it and enjoy it but of course it has evolved a lot since) . Here is my presentation video of it

Just finished it :) It weighs 117,4 grams which is pretty good considering that the bare blank weight is 64 grams.

That’s a very interesting concept. It’s not something I think to could trust. Especially with an Exist but definitely cool looking.

I’m afraid I don’t really understand what you are trying to say . If you are afraid that is not strong enough I can assure you that is actually stronger than a conventional reel seat. Just like laminate wood is stronger than the tree it came from. There is more to it than meets the eye, it consists of multiple layers and each of them has it’s precise purpose. Besides, everyone who ever fished a two ( or multiple) section rod actually saw the concept behind at the rod joints . If anything is to fail , by the time the reel seat is under enough force for it to break, the blank will already be broken or the guides would have been stripped from it already ( guides are attached to the blank just with some thread and resin while the reel seat has all that and more). Not to mention the line or terminal tackle :) I am using the system for more than 6 years now and I had it on my European Catfish rods back home and those those fish can really put up a fight .

I guess I’m saying I’d be concerned of the reel seat letting go while fighting a fish. I guess I’d have to see it in person before 100% trusting it. Regardless, the seat looks awesome.

Well, that can be arranged, seeing it in person I mean ( and fishing it );) I guess you are not the first and certainly won’t be the last who feels that way about it before touching it. :) People are usually concerned if it stays locked considering that it doesn’t have a thread and a locking nut but, that is not the case either. I never had one fail or open in 6 years of use and I have no complaints for such things from other people who enjoy it either but I did see cracked locking nuts or conventional seats which needed to be changed in this time :) Think of it this way: I would have never risked a Daiwa Morethan Branzino, Shimano Stella or the newer Daiwa Exist if I had any doubts about it. ;)
In other words, thank you for the compliment, I am glad you like it specially since I am more of a practical man and I tend to sacrifice the look for comfort and performance when I build one of these.
