Spinning Rods? who uses them still???

RJ got me thinking with his posts in the DX743 for sale post.

Who really still uses spinning rods for Bass fishing anymore? I throw Bass fishing in here because everyone who commented on that part of the post is a bass fisherman. I know some of you do (Brad) still use them and know a few that don't use any! I am truly wondering what other people either still use them for?

I personally have two and feel I have one too many but that second spinning rod comes in handy if my wife or kids want to come fishing. This year, one will be used for wacky rigging and drop shotting (If I even end up doing this) and the other will be used for spybaiting. Other than that, All of my other techniques are thrown on a bait caster.

For me, once I got used to a baitcaster, I felt it was really hard to put one down.

You guys are crazy, spinning rods can never be replaced!!
Drop shot
Dragging tubes
Wacky rigged senkos
Blade baits
Spy baits
Jerkbaits
Hair Jigs
Flukes

I still find it hard to believe there are bass fisherman out there today that do not drop shot

I used to ... but don't anymore. It all comes down to personal preference. I prefer bait-casting reels and rods.
I have not found one technique that I can't use with a bait-casting combo.

I find it hard to believe there are bass fisherman out there today that do not use crank-baits.
JP DeRose does not throw senkos and I don't drop shot. But we both crank a lot. 8)

Drop shot and Dragging tubes for me.
I may try spybaits

And i find if I'm fishing out of kayak or canoe they are little easier to cast.

I wouldn't use a tube, jig or drop shot without a spinning rod.

I have 4 spinning in the boat. 2 are for tubes (I am the Toobinator after all  ) and 1 for senkos and one for jerkbaits. I tried the jerkbait rod on Champlain on the weekend and I am much more comfortable with spinning over casting for this technique. I have tried casting for dragging tubes in deep water and current with up to 3/4 of an oz and it just doesn't feel right in my hand. Having said that, drop shotting does feel much better with a baitcaster in my hands and I have used this style of reel for years. I am in the minority though.

I have owned a few, ended up selling them.
Would like to own at least one spinning outfit once again lolol

What are the benefits and advantages a spinning combo will have over a finesse baitcaster that has a shallow spool? (Shallow spool resulting in better spool inertia for lighter lures).
Is it preference only at this point?

For me it's the ability to use light line/baits i.e 1/8oz or less.I know there are BFS setups which are gaining in popularity, but for me when I have a 5lb smallie on the end of 6lb test I'm thankful I have the fine tune drag of a spinning reel. I don't know if it's because I grew up fishing walleye, but a spinning rod in my hand in deep water just feels right <3

How far can you throw an 1/8-ounce jig w/5-inch grub on a baitcaster, against the wind? Not far enough.

There are not too many out there that know they can use a bait-caster for finesse applications.
When was the last time you herd a "Pro" do any promotion for finesse casting rods and reels.

Annnnnnnnnndddddd .... Finesse bait-casters are much more expensive. 8)
You can get a fairly good spinning combo (Rod and Reel) for a fraction of what a finesse baitcasting reel will cost.

Also doesn't help that these BFS reels are pretty much only available in the JDM market, and most have no idea what that is all about.

But the Japanese "Shimano guys" know the power of the dark side.
Like I said before .... quality finesse bait-casters are expensive.
Not even going to talk about Daiwa and Megabass finesse spools.
