Re: McKay lake/the pond
I had a quick look and couldn't determine whether it is actually a city of Ottawa park or one maintained by the Rockcliffe community. Given its location, it's probably safe to assume that it's managed and paid for by the home owners within Rockcliffe. With respect to any online searches w.r.t. McKay...

Re: Where can I get flies for smallmouth bass
Well we still have week to go before we an toss flies them... ;-) But in terms of where you can find them, you can check out SAIL (in the Train Yards) or the Green Drake (on Holland). SAIL typically has cheaper flies (in price and quality), though the Green Drake brings in patterns you won't find at...

Re: Is the gate open now-a-days to a lake that has brown tro
I wouldn't know anything about the gate, but the reports that I have received have indicated that the surface water temps have climbed above what is considered safe for all trout. That being said, they will be a lot harder to catch and released fish will have a significantly higher mortality rate.

Re: Poaching?
RJ is right poaching is a nasty word, it should be reserved for someone who knowingly keeps fish beyond the limit or oos fish. Someone who in the moment of excitement takes a pic of an oos fish is not a poacher. They are violating the letter of the law and need to be careful but it's a different an...

Re: Poaching?
Actually you can continue to fish "catch and release" after you've reached your catch limit. If you catch a fish after reaching the daily catch or possession limit for that species, the fish must be released immediately back to the water (see Ontario’s Catch and Retain Rules, page 9). If t...

Re: Water levels in Dow's Lake
Man I was hoping hogs back falls would be half decent, I need a spot to go for walleye opener this saturday!!! Anyone have any ideas? I know pretty much all of the spots in Ottawa to go, and they are crazy flooded with muddy water. Maybe billings/brewer park area? Never really have much luck there ...

Re: Loop at end of fly line?
I've had no problems with the factory welded loops. For larger saltwater species I'd probably make my own. While nail knots are fine on floating links, they're not well suited for sinking lines. In this case I prefer to use an Albright knot if I don't decide to make my own loop connector.

I usually give it about 2 weeks after being filled to let all the dead leaves, etc to settle out and the bite to pick up. The same thing is true for Black Rapids,

Re: Preventing out of season bass strikes.
As previously mentioned, COs will often watch anglers before they "introduce" themselves. If they've been watching you pull bass after bass, chances are they're not going to buy the "pike fishing" line. Always best to move on if only bass are biting.

Re: Too early?
The local tribs are all running high, fast and very cold! We've had a few drownings in the past because people were too eager to get out on the water when the conditions were clearly hazardous. Once we get a good stretch of sunny, warm days and the water warms up, you can start prospecting around th...

Re: Manotick Mill
If you're going to wade it, a pair of studded wading boots and a wading staff are essential as the rocks around the mill are slick as snot.

Re: Manotick Mill
I'd have to agree with a number of posters regarding wide variety of fish that can be caught ht. I haven't seen any pike, though I have seen some good sized Muskie there. The best way to fish it (and most of the waters around the city) is to done a pair of waders and explore. Most people that are ch...
