Re: Catching Bait - minows etc.

I'm a big fan of the seine net. I usually take a couple slices of bread, break them up into little pieces and 'chum' the shallow water around the boat launch or beach. After most of it has sunk, I (and a friend) scoop the area with the net. Once you get the technique down you can get 30-40 minnows i...

Re: Too tired

If I plan to get up early to fish, I find it easier to have a friend that's going with you. That way you both kind of motivate each other to get out of bed by 6am lol. I usually try to do all my house work / projects / chores on Saturday, leaving Sunday for some guilt-free fishing.

Re: 1979 Mercury 200 20hp - water pump issues

Update: So I ended up dropping the lower unit. Turns out the black rubber grommet / spacer that fits over the end of the copper water pipe, then into the water pump housing, had moved up the water pipe so there was not a firm seal at the base of the pump. Reseated the grommet and the pipe after MUCH...

Hull repairs on my Tinny - Anyone do TIG welding?

I've got a 14ft springbok that has a bow leak that I would like to have welded / repaired. Doesn't have to be a pro job, just has to float. The spot to be welded might be 6-8" long at the most, right on the keel as it curves under the boat. Its a slow leak, not a gaping hole, but annoying nonet...

Re: Trout rivers near Arnprior?

Interesting you mention Paul's creek. I have walked that creek from the graveyard to the lake and caught nothing. I think all the locals fish by the wooden bridge near the culvert under the road. Was it just me or did you notice platforms and crude structures along the shore as you walked down? Hunt...

Re: McKay lake/the pond

The backyards of the homes around that area extend right to the edge of the water. Through agreements they have allowed a right- of-way for people to continue to swim there. Its technically a conservation area, so I think that's how they regulate the swimming hours. I have been swimming there 'after...

Re: 1979 Mercury 200 20hp - water pump issues

Thanks for the pointers guys. I've got an air compressor so I'll try blowing out the tube and see what happens. Might as well drop the LU and do it right. Oh the pleasures of keeping older outboards running....

Re: Combos for kids (5&8)???

Just bought a couple combos at Walmart for my nephews to use at the cottage - 8 and 11. They were $20 a piece. Nothing special, but they get the job done. Saw they had pink rods there too....

1979 Mercury 200 20hp - water pump issues

Took this beast out of the shed and fired it up yesterday, but I'm not getting any water through the pee-hole! Here are the details: Last used summer of 2012 after a water pump and carb replacement. Functioned well, no issues. Stored in my shed since then (2 years) I did not do any sort of prep or m...

Re: Trout rivers near Arnprior?

What about around Low, QC? Never been, but I got some advice on here that it was a good starting point if you're looking for stream trout.

@ Jimmy - the beer is cheaper in La Belle Province too! Win-win! And you get to avoid those speed traps between the boarder and Watertown lol.

Re: Transporting a canoe

MEC is a good place to get the kits - they'll even show you the best way to tie it down. I have a roof rack on my CR-V and still use the foam blocks as a cushion for the canoe. The roof rack serves as a tie-down point. I have also used pool noodles as cushions, though they don't work as well - the f...

Re: Trout rivers near Arnprior?

I have looked for a long, long time for trout in creeks /rivers around here and they are few and far between. You have to go way, way back in the bush where all the right conditions for trout are there, and even then they have to be in the mood to bite. That being said, head up towards Algonquin par...
