Re: Spring Catfish

Pickerel rig and worms are my go-to. Nothing like fighting two chunky cats simultaneously. Tributaries are best for me early in the spring. After walleye opener big cats seem to congregate on structure before sliding deep for the summer. Mid-summer it's not uncommon for us to fish for cats to fill l...

2016 Bungalow Report

We stuck it out until the bitter end, and why wouldn't we. Even after the mild temps of early March our huts were still sitting on over 20" of ice. It was a frustrating year to be in the hut rental game. OPP was telling people to stay off the ice, NCC was telling people to stay off the ice, SQ ...

Re: Icefishing tips and tricks

1- spray your auger with Pam veg oil spray to keep the ice from accumulating on it.

2- use pull through nylon straps on your pop up instead of the strings they come with.

Re: Worms vs Minnows

I've tried worms a few times for walleye with no success but I know someone who fishes high current areas with bottom bouncers and slow death (yes ice fishing) and does quite well. For brook trout and pan fish worms are my go to.

Ice Hut and Bungalow Rentals

Hi folks, We were able to put 4 of our rental huts on the Ottawa River in Rockland this week. Our 6 man bungalow will be out for the weekend. Next weekend, our full fleet of 3 overnight and 3 daily rentals will be on the River in Rockland. I cleared a half acre pad and road and flooded it to build t...

Re: Ottawa River Ice

Another update. Conditions are changing fast on the Lower Ottawa. The shoreline slush has subsided considerably since yesterday. I was able to walk out and the bay I was on had 7-9" of the clearest ice I've ever seen on the Ottawa. For about 50' near shore there's an air pocket between the ice ...

Re: Ottawa River Ice

Just an update. The water has continued to rise. For those familiar with the Rockland boat launch, the water is now flush with the top of the cement docks. Water levels are expected to start dropping back down to normal levels sometime towards the end of the week. Here's the word from Yves at Ozile'...

Ottawa River Ice

Hi folks, For those of you who had started fishing the bays of the Ottawa River, be very careful! The water has come up and shores are slushy and spots that were iced over last week now have either open water, or very poor ice. Even a relatively well sheltered bay in Rockland that had decent ice las...

Re: Winter Tip-Up Overhaul

You wouldn't believe how many bites you never see using anything but a balanced set-up. I couldn't tell you how often I noticed a rod an inch lower than it was a minute ago and had a walleye on the line. Or how often up north people I fish with go to check their bait and have a fish on. They work gr...

Re: Winter Tip-Up Overhaul

27" medium light jigging rod with straight mono or fluorocarbon, 6 or 8lbs, on a balanced rod holder #4 or #6 red treble hook. Get rid of the tip-ups.

Re: Ottawa River Guided Fishing Year End Report

Thanks for the kind words RJ. Means a lot. Dave, it was a pleasure having you aboard again this year. Too bad the boys couldn't make it. When we were both giggling at the pike missing the buzzbaits by the end of the trip I knew It was a good day to be a guide. Might as well include a couple photos f...
