They come in a few different sizes. 1/32 , 1/16, 1/8 and 3/16. It adds a bit of weight to the worm but exposes more of the hook and at 90 degrees so supposedly better for hook set. The push is for saving your plastics ( not having to remove and re-insert the hooks causing worm damage).
