Re: Where can I get flies for smallmouth bass

There are a couple of Canadian guys tying their own flies and selling them on Ebay. I've purchased a few from them and been quite satisfied with their work.

No need to get too complicated with smallmouth flies, either. I must have caught 90% of my bass last year on a bead-headed Woolly Bugger.

Gobies and longer growing seasons due to climate change. Gord Pyzer has done some interesting writing on this topic; here's a sample:

Re: OOS Fish and Pictures

Legally, I'd say the MNR is going out on thin ice with this ruling. It may only last until someone gets a ticket and decides to challenge it in court. The regs state that you must immediately return an OOS fish to the water. Fair enough--that rules out holding up a fish and snapping a few photos. Ho...

Re: Talk about bad luck.

LeGrand, If it's any consolation to you, the area inside Long Sault Parkway is still pretty much frozen over. You may have been out of luck even if you'd ended up making the trip!

Re: February Perch

Those are some great perch. At first glance, it looks like a bunch of St. Lawrence "jumbos". And as Doug stated above, they're tough to beat in the pan.

Thanks for posting that, Smitty. I suspect that the reading may get a little dense and bureaucratic, but if this is the future then it pays to be informed.

Re: 2013 Kemptville stocking report

I wasn't trying to hijack the thread by bringing up the hunter safety course. I was simply using it as as example of how a mandatory education course can improve and/or preserve our use of a natural resource. I don't think it's the only approach to managing fisheries, but I think it could be a very ...

Re: 2013 Kemptville stocking report

I wasn't suggesting that an educational program replace enforcement or well-conceived regulations. But I do think that it could be of substantial benefit to the fishery precisely because it would create a greater emphasis on the ethical element of the sport. Here in front of me I have my Hunter's Gu...

Re: 2013 Kemptville stocking report

It certainly seems to be a moving target, this business of getting a fishery "right", and enforcement and regulation both have a role to play. I do wonder, however, if there's an educational component missing in all of this. It's easy to imagine that a significant portion of the fishing co...
