Re: Silver Lake - Say Hi Family Day Weekend
Thanks Scarkner for that clarification. As for Silver's status as a laker hole, I agree with you based on my (somewhat limited) experience there that it's not that productive. But it's easy to get to, that's for sure. Maybe ease of access is the cause of the problem. In general I have always had the...

Re: Silver Lake - Say Hi Family Day Weekend
So are you guys fishing across from the Hwy 7 launch/public picnic area, i.e., near the island? Are lakers the target? I have always been intrigued by Silver Lake as I love fishing for lakers. I've been camping there a few times, it's a nice little provincial park. I have fished it a few times from ...

Re: knot for tip up line
Thanks guys. It's dacron. Maybe I am just bad at tying! Actually, now that I think of it, I tied the regular clinch. Should do the extra step and go with an improved clinch. Will try that.
Thanks again.

knot for tip up line
What knot should one use with the heavier tip up line? Sorry I don't know the name. I'm pretty new to ice fishing and bought a few tip ups from Crappy Tire last winter. The line is thick black stuff, like nylon or something. I am finding it difficult to tie a secure knot to attach it to a swivel. Tr...

Re: Mississippi Lake problems
I caught a bunch of perch in Mississippi River a couple years ago, took them home and cleaned them, they were full of little white worms. Just unappetizing, but not harmful apparently. These were from the same system as your perch. Not a coincidence. Contrast this to a few pike I kept from the same ...

Re: Hard water or soft?
Soft water for sure. Probably due to me not ice fishing growing up (try ice fishing in Vancouver, I dare ya!). Nothing like being out in the boat or even casting from a dock or the bank. Ice fishing is fun but I see it as something to do when you can't hit the open water.

Re: shirley's bay
Are there any public depth charts for Shirley's Bay? Might help in understanding better (I have tried to map it out a bit in the summer with my Kayak, but without much luck). Scarkner, check out the Navionics web app, gives you some decent details on the depths at Shirley's. http://webapp.navionics...

Staring out my office window looking at a -25 degree day... Your optimism is much appreciated! I have a fishing/camping weekend booked in June and I'm like you, already counting the days. Only 90-120 days to open water season!!!

Re: Soft Water Shut Down 2014
May I ask how old Hunter is? Yep no problem. He will be 2 years old on boxing day so he was over a year and half old when we brought him out for the first time. He is not a pure lab though they say he is approx 75% lab and 25% hound. Looks like I will have to take up hunting next year since Hunter ...

Re: Soft Water Shut Down 2014
Great report, thanks for sharing! May I ask how old Hunter is? Always curious how old is too old to try and train a dog to hunt. Habituating them to the sound of gunfire is usually the problem with older dogs. My lab was around 6 when he heard a shotgun for the first time. He took off with his tail ...

recommendation for bottom bouncing?
Can anybody give me some tips on a good rod and reel set-up for bottom bouncing? I have some gift cards for Sail ($200) and want to buy a new rod/reel that will allow me to do some bottom bouncing next year.I mostly fish the Ottawa River and Mississippi Lake, so wouldn't be too deep, mostly 10-30 fo...

Re: Rideau is frozen
regarding the back lakes... I went out for a late season grouse hunt in Lanark on Saturday Nov. 29. Saw one of those back lakes up close, specifically Green Lake off of French Line Road. Was completely frozen and my buddy, who's braver/dumber than me, walked out on it about 20 feet. It held him even...

Re: How did your soft water season go?
This year was my second full year of being really back into fishing. Was a pretty avid angler when I was young out in BC but I was mainly a saltwater guy. I caught the bug again over the past few years fishing with my father-in-law up in northern Quebec. This year was my first full year with a boat ...

Re: Last Fishing Outing Of the Year - What to target?
All good tips, great community here. I might go out one of these nights and try stickbaits and grubs as suggested. I'll work the Ottawa River. I have found the Rideau River tough going this fall. Reboot, Oziles does sell minnows. I have bought from them in November before. Haven't this year though (...

Re: Last Fishing Outing Of the Year - What to target?
Tbone: thanks for the tip, I will check it out! I have been using a cheap one (made by Thill, I think) and it's kind of flimsy. I like the sound of the one you got at Lebaron. Sounds sturdy!
