Re: What is your opinion?
Conservation has to trump competition, period. I'd be in favour of FMZ 20 (the St. Lawrence River) adopting a period-specific size limit similar to that in place in FMZ (the Ottawa River). A maximum size limit of somewhere around 20 inches from the May opener to the beginning of June would take care...

Re: Underwater imaging - a different perspective
Very interesting to hear a diver's perspective on this. It creates a nice three-dimensional image of what is apparent if you take a look at a chart of the St. Lawrence. Those drops and ridges are all over the place, and the bass and walleye that they hold are fishable--even the deep ones. There are ...

Re: new ice portable
tbone, you might have a tough time getting a flipover in the trunk of a small car. I have an Otter one-man flipover and it pretty much takes up all the space that my old CRV can provide with the seats folded down. It might fit into the back of a hatchback, but it would be a really tight squeeze.

Re: St. Lawrence near Long Sault
The best launch option--if you wish to fish inside the parkway--is the Hoople Island ramp. From there you can follow the bay out toward Wales Island, and that's where you can start getting into the weed flats adjacent to the old creek bed. Parking capacity at the Hoople launch is limited. And I stro...

Re: St. Lawrence near Long Sault
All of the species you mentioned are in that area. I'd suggest staying inside the parkway, with a good starting point being just outside the Hoople Creek bridge. The submerged creek bed has weed flats adjacent to it. With a little trial and error, you should be able to find the weed edge/dropoff, an...

Re: Long Island Locks - Fishing from the locks?
For what it's worth, I've twice stopped by in the last week to fish off the locks. No parks employees around the locks, though I could hear them working away in their yard. I can't imagine that chasing away fishermen is high on their list of priorities. Until such time as I'm officially told otherwi...

The islands/bays of the Long Sault Parkway, between Ingleside and Long Sault, are a good starting point, and the ice is safe. If you drive along the #2 in that area you'll see a small village of huts just outside Hoople Bay. Unfortunately the parkway itself is under repair and is gated off for the s...

It was more or less pure luck on my part, since I don't always remember to throw my camera into the tackle bag. Let's give full credit to the pike for being willing to make a repeat appearance and pose nicely. Anyway, this and a few other sightings have turned me into a guy who spends too much time ...

Pike from above
Here's a photo I thought was interesting enough to share. This creature appeared under me the other day while out on the St. Lawrence. http://i579.photobucket.com/albums/ss237/longsault/IMG_5304.jpg It drifted in, took off, and was then considerate enough to return three more times. That gave me eno...

Last season I happened to have a few leftover shiners, and so I wrapped them up in paper towel and put them in a ziploc bag and more or less forgot about them. Anyway, I pulled them out in late December when I started on the perch, and what a sight they were. Completely freeze-dried to the point of ...

General questions about Shirley's Bay
Hello people, A buddy and I are taking our first-ever steps out onto Shirley's Bay tomorrow. While I'm sure much will be obvious when we get there, I do have a couple of questions that I'm sure can be answered really briefly by those in the know! First, what kind of time/distance are we looking at t...
